Joint press communique of the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar

(BEIJING, April 10, 2017)

I. At the invitation of President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, President Wu tingjue of the Republic of Myanmar paid a state visit to China from April 6-11.

During the visit, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Wu tingjue. Premier Li Keqiang of the State Council and chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhang Dejiang met with President Wu tingjue respectively. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on consolidating the traditional friendship between China and Myanmar and deepening the comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two countries, and reached a broad consensus.

2. The two sides exchanged views on the traditional friendly cooperative relationship between China and Myanmar, spoke highly of the friendship between the two countries and agreed that since the establishment of diplomatic relations 67 years ago, the two countries have always adhered to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, promoting the rapid development of bilateral relations has brought tangible benefits to the two peoples.

3. The two sides reiterated that they will continue to pursue the policy of good-neighborliness and friendship, adhere to the strategic height and long-term perspective, focus on the fundamental interests of the two peoples, and promote the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between China and Myanmar to continuously make new progress.

4. The two sides agreed to continue to maintain the momentum of high-level mutual visits and contacts on multilateral occasions, expand friendly exchanges at all levels, strengthen strategic communication, and deepen the exchange of experience in governing the country.

5. Myanmar supports the Belt and Road Initiative and supports China to run the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

VI. The two sides will continue to play a good role in intergovernmental cooperation mechanisms such as the Joint Economic and Trade Commission, the Agricultural Cooperation Commission and the Electric Power Cooperation Commission, and strengthen economic and trade, agriculture, electric power, transportation, mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields such as production capacity will promote common development and benefit the people of the two countries.

7. China supports Myanmar to take a development path that conforms to its national conditions, steadily promotes political transformation, appreciates the efforts made by Myanmar government to develop economy and improve people’s livelihood, and is willing to provide help to this end within its capabilities. Myanmar reiterated its firm adherence to the one-China policy and continued to support China’s position on Taiwan, Tibet-related and Xinjiang-related issues.

8. Both sides agreed to continue to make good use of the 2+2 high-level consultation mechanism for China-Myanmar foreign affairs and national defense, jointly safeguard the security, rule of law, peace and stability in the border areas of the two countries, and promote the economic and social development and improvement of people’s livelihood in the border areas. China supports Myanmar square tube political dialogue to achieve domestic peace and national reconciliation. Myanmar thanks China for its assistance to the peace and reconciliation process in Myanmar and welcomes China to continue to play a constructive role in this regard.

9. The two sides agreed to continue to strengthen coordination and cooperation in multilateral occasions such as the United Nations and China-ASEAN to jointly promote peace, stability and development in the region.

President Wu tingjue expressed his gratitude to President Xi Jinping for his warm and friendly reception during his visit to China and invited President Xi Jinping to pay a state visit to Myanmar as soon as possible at the convenience of both sides. President Xi Jinping expressed his gratitude.
